Snowy Owl - Photo of the Day - April 28th, 2011
"Snowy Owl"
These large owls have distinct white feathers.
This is the only owl species where the male and females can be distinguished by the colours of their feathers. Females have dark black mottling on their bodies while males appear almost completely white.
For warmth, their feathers are extremely thick even covering their entire legs, right to the talons on their feet.
They have a round head with no feather tufts, and bright yellow eyes.

Bald Eagle - 'Jefferson' - Photo of the Day - April 26th, 2011
"Bald Eagle - 'Jefferson'"
These birds are primarily dark coloured. By the time they are 4 or 5 years old, they will develop a distinctive white head and tail feathers. The adults also have a large yellow beak.
Juveniles often have white mottling, especially under their wings.
When seen soaring, these birds hold their wings horizontally flat and at a ninety degree angle to their bodies.

These to cows were standing on top of a hill, head to head and trying to push each other off of the hill. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. At one point another cow even got behind the red one to help push.

Bighorn sheep are named for their large, curved horns atop their heads that weigh around 14 kg on a male. Though both sexes have horns, the males are much larger, and are utilized in the headbutting battles for female's attention during mating season. These horns advertise to females a male's health and age since they continuously grow through his life. Their body also has double-layered skulls supported by struts and a huge tendon linking the head and spine to cushion the blows from their rival.

The great horned owl is Alberta's Provincial Bird.
This species nests very early sometimes laying eggs in February during the cold winter months.
The great horned owl is one of the largest types of owls in North America.
This owl is dark brown, with a squared off head, gray mottled and streaked below, setting of the stark white throat patch. The white patch is more visible when this owl hoots.
This owl has prominent, widely spaced ear tufts and large yellow eyes.

"Barn Owl"
The Barn Owl is a pale, long-winged, long-legged owl with a short squarish tail. Tail shape is a way of distinguishing the Barn Owl from true owl when seen in flight, as are the wavering motions and the open dangling feathered legs. The light face with its heart shape and the black eyes give the flying bird an odd and startling appearance, like a flat mask with oversized oblique black eyeslits, the ridge of feathers above the bill somewhat resembling a nose.
Its head and upper body typically vary between a light brown and a dark grey. The heart-shaped face is usually bright white. The toes, as the bill, vary in colour; their colour ranges from pinkish to dark pinkish-grey. The talons are black.
Contrary to popular belief, it does not hoot, instead it produces the characteristic shree scream, ear-shattering at close range. Males in courtship give a shrill twitter. It can hiss like a snake to scare away intruders, and when captured or cornered, it throws itself on its back and flails with sharp-taloned feet, making for an effective defense. Also given in such situations is a rasp and a clicking snap, produced by the bill or possibly the tongue. It is most recognizable by its "mask-like" face.

Today we went for a day trip to the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta.
Originally called the Albertosaurus, this dinosaur was renamed the Gorgosaurus in 2003.
Smaller than its cousin Tyrannosaurus, Gorgosaurus was still eight metres of fearsome carnivore. It had tiny forelimbs, but powerful jaws and strong hind legs that ended in claws.
