Yellow Hakweed (Hieracium caespitosum) is also known by the names meadow hawkweed, field hawkweed, king devil, yellow paintbrush, devil’s paintbrush, yellow devil, yellow fox-and-cubs, and yellow king-devil. Yellow hawkweed is native to northern, central, and eastern portions of
Europe, however, along with it’s orangehawkweed cousin, it is now widespread as an invasive species in North America. The plant was most likely introduced into the United States in 1828 as an ornamental. The
plant is now found from Quebec to Ontario, and southward to Georgia and Tennessee.

Orange Hawkweed (Hieracium aurantiacum, Pilosella aurantiaca) is also known as Fox-and-cubs, Tawny Hawkweed, Devil’s Paintbrush, Grim-the-collier.

At one time, it was believed that the hawkweeds improved peoples’ eyesight. Hawks, whose survival depended on good eyesight, are said to have visited the hawkweeds to drink their juice to strengthen their eyesight. Because these plant are hard to remove once established, farmers called them Devil’s Paintbrush or Devil’s Weed.

"A photo of Castle Mountain taken on our way to Lake Louise.

Castle Mountain is located within Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada in the Canadian Rockies, approximately half-way between Banff and Lake Louise.

The mountain was named in 1858 by James Hector for its castle-like or fortress appearance. Following the post-war visit of U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower, the name was changed to Mount Eisenhower by the then Canadian Prime Minister W. L. Mackenzie-King. Eventually, public pressure forced the name to be changed back in 1979 to its original but an isolated pinnacle at the southeastern end is now called Eisenhower Tower."

"White-Breasted Nuthatch"

A white-breasted nuthatch clings to a tree trunk. Taken in Lynde Shores Conservation Area in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

A common feeder bird with clean black, gray, and white markings, White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them.
