"Red-winged Blackbird"

A red-winged blackbird clings to reeds in a marsh on a warm summer day. Taken in Bluffer’s Park on the shores of Lake Ontario in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.

One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored, the Red-winged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued, streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow. In the North, their early arrival and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring.

"View from Middle Waterton Lake"

A sea of golden grass leads the eye first to a strip of forest and the tip of Middle Waterton Lake, and then up the slopes of Vimy Mountain. this region, where the prairies abruptly meet the Rocky Mountains with very little in the way of foothills, is often called “the Crown of the Continent”.

Captured from just above the shoreline of Middle Waterton Lake, inside the gates of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada.
