Great Horned Owl - Photo of the Day - April 21st, 2011

"Great Horned Owl"

The great horned owl is Alberta's Provincial Bird.

This species nests very early sometimes laying eggs in February during the cold winter months.

The great horned owl is one of the largest types of owls in North America.

This owl is dark brown, with a squared off head, gray mottled and streaked below, setting of the stark white throat patch. The white patch is more visible when this owl hoots.

This owl has prominent, widely spaced ear tufts and large yellow eyes.

Photo taken at the Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale, Alberta, Canada.
