Swainson's Hawk - Dusty - Photo of the Day - May 30th, 2011

"Swainson's Hawk - Dusty"

The Swainson's Hawk is one of the most common hawks on the prairies.

The top of its wings and body are a uniform dark brown in colour while the underside of the wings and body are a light buff colour.

Adults have a red/brown bib that extends part way down the chest.

When soaring overhead a dark coloured band on the trailing edge of the wings is a signature identifying characteristic.

Taken at the Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale, Alberta, Canada.
