"Snowy Owl"

Day 31 of 365

A snowy owl perched on a hay bale in southern Alberta, between Magrath and Cardston, Alberta, Canada.

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large, bird of prey of the Arctic regions of the world. It nests north of the tree line, in the arctic tundra of both Eurasia and North America. The Canadian breeding range includes the islands of the Arctic Archipelago, from Ellesmere Island in the north, to Baffin Island in the east, to Banks Island in the west, and along the northern coast of the continent from Yukon Territory to Labrador.

In winter the Snowy Owl visits many parts of southern Canada and the northern United States. In certain parts of their wintering range (on the prairies of western Canada and in the unforested parts of southern Ontario and Quebec, as well as in adjacent regions of the northern United States), they are regular visitors, although their numbers vary from year to year.

Unlike many other owls, the snowy owl is not nocturnal. With almost constant daylight during their breeding and nesting periods in the Arctic, many believe the owls have adapted to their environment.

These beautiful birds have white and dark brown feathers covering their bodies that supply them with camouflage in their usually snowy habitat. Males can be pure white, however females always have some brown feathers. Since snowy owls are found in colder climates, they have a thick layer of down underneath their many layers of feathers to keep themselves warm in even the most frigid temperatures.

The Shaman Card

Wisdom - transcendence - intuition - deep knowledge of underlying forces - clear insight into recurring cycles - supernatural talents - otherworldly, extrasensory visions.

Inner message: The Shaman inside you is capable of merging his intuitive perceptiveness with the wisdom of the Elders. Meditate and find out what really motivates you, what ... See Moreyour inner core truly desires. Don't waste time trying to fulfill more superficial desires. They can never satisfying your ancient longing. This is not their task. Shift your attention to what is essential. Most essential in your life is your own being. Without knowing the true essence of your being, your heart will always remain empty and dissatisfied. Without recognition of who you are, without inwardly awakening to that, you stumble like a drunkard through a maze of meaningless limitations. Remember your Self! Take the time and whatever space you need to explore your innermost being. For that, you don't have to go anywhere.

Outward manifestation: Much of what feels no longer right for you is ready to leave or fall away. Be thankful! You may have to go through the pain of dissillusionment, but that's in fact your liberation. If you want to awaken to Reality, no spiritual entertainment technique can help you. It is time to face yourself. The Shaman merely reminds you of your spiritual heritage. He points to your source, the unnameable, the mystery of your existence, the power that created everything and absorbs you back into itself at the end of this life. Contemplate how to best spend your time!

The Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a small, common songbird of the tit family, widely distributed in Canada, Alaska, and the northern United States.
The black-capped chickadee favours deciduous woods and gardens. They are non-migratory birds, but do sometimes move south within their range in winter.
They are quite vocal birds, with complex calls to alert the flock of predators, food sources, and to coordinate flock movement, including complex information. The most well known call is the distinctive chick-a-dee-dee-dee call that gave the species it’s name.
