"Common Red Paintbrush"

A macro photograph of the bright red bracts protecting the duller flower-head of a Common Red Paintbrush (Castilleja miniata) plant.

Captured in Kananaskis Country in the eastern reaches of the Canadian Rockies of Alberta, Canada.

Taken with a Canon Rebel XSi using an 18-55mm lens. No post processing.

Castilleja, is a genus of about 200 species of wildflowers, collectively known by the common names Indian paintbrush or Prairie-fire. It can often be difficult to identify particular species within the genus, were it not for some assistance from reference material i would not have been able to identify this flower.

Castilleja miniata is a species of Indian paintbrush known by the common name giant red Indian paintbrush. It is native to western North America from Alaska to Ontario to California to New Mexico, where it grows usually in moist places in a wide variety of habitat types. This wildflower is a perennial herb growing up to about 80 centimeters tall, slender and green to dark purple in herbage color. The lance-shaped leaves are 3 to 6 centimeters long, pointed, and coated in thin hairs. The inflorescence is made up of bright red to pale orange or orange-tipped bracts. Between the bracts emerge the yellow-green, red-edged tubular flowers.” – Wikipedia

"Canada Thistle"

A macro photograph of the deceptively beautiful purple flower of a Canada thistle

Captured near St. Mary’s Reservoir Provincial Recreation area in southern Alberta, Canada.

Captured with a Canon Rebel XSi with an 18-55mm lens.

Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) is a perennial flowering plant that is an invader from Eurasia.
Canada thistle is misnamed, since it was brought to this continent from Europe in the early 1600’s. Due to competition with crop plants, weed control legislation for Canada thistle was passed as early as 1795 in Vermont and 1831 in New York. Canada thistle is a problem even in Europe where natural enemies abound, because it is an aggressive weed that spreads both by seed and extensive root systems. The deep roots grow horizontally and send up shoots along their length, forming dense colonies.

"Daisy Bee"

A close-up shot of a bee enjoying the sweet nectar of a beautiful common daisy on a warm spring day.

This picture was captured at the Harmony Creek Conservation Area in Oshawa, Ontario.
Taken with a Canon Digital Rebel using an 18-55mm lens.

Bellis perennis is a common European species of Daisy, often considered the archetypal species of that name. Many related plants also share the name “Daisy”, so to distinguish this species from other daisies it is sometimes qualified as Common Daisy, Lawn Daisy or occasionally English daisy. It is native to western, central and northern Europe. The species is widely naturalized in North America, and also in South America.

It is a herbaceous plant with short creeping rhizomes and small rounded or spoon-shaped evergreen leaves 2–5 cm long, grows close to ground. The flowerheads are 2–3 cm in diameter, with white ray florets (often tipped red) and yellow disc florets; they are produced on leafless stems 2–10 cm (rarely 15 cm) tall.
