Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi) - Photo of the Day - March 19th, 2011

"Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi)"

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi) in Alberta, Canada is a landscape sacred to the Blackfoot people. The site is 32 km (20 mi) east of the town of Milk River. An archaeological preserve within the Park protects the largest concentration of rock art on the North American plains. The artists are thought to be the Blackfoot people who settled this area for at least 3,500 years. There is speculation some of the rock art may be up to 6,000 years old.

Covering the sheer sandstone cliffs of the area along the Milk River are petroglyph carvings, paintings and pictographs which include vivid depictions of hunting and spiritual vision quests. But by far the most common are scenes of warriors and battles. Some speculate these were meant as warnings to neighbouring enemies to stay away. Guided interpretive walks and tours are available from mid-May until Labour Day. Interpretive programs are scheduled regularly.

Snow at Mirror Lake - Photo of the Day - March 9th, 2011

"Snow at Mirror Lake"

A photo of Mirror Lake, above Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, taken on a nice crisp spring day. Mirror Lake is accessible from the Lake Agnes Trail in Lake Louise.

As you walk along the shoreline of Lake Louise, the trail to Lake Agnes branches right just beyond the hotel, then climbs steadily through dense subalpine forest. After 1.7 kilometres (1.1 miles), the first switchback marks a break in the trees where you have a clear view down to the pale turquoise water of Lake Louise. Another one kilometre (0.6 miles) of forest-enclosed climbing brings you to Mirror Lake, a tiny lake with dark, layered cliffs of the Big Beehive looming above. The two trails leading off in opposite directions from Mirror Lake both converge at Lake Agnes.

"Blue Peafowl"

The blue peafowl females are 86 cm in length, while the male measure up to 2.1 m during the breeding season (most of which is tail). The peacock has iridescent blue-green plumage with elongated tail feathers, each of which has an 'eye' on it. He uses these bright colours to help attract mates during the mating, but they also serve to make him more obvious to predators (obviously not enhancing his survival abilities). This 'hindrance' for the male is an excellent example of sexual selection, which doesn't always select for the best survivor, but will select for the most prodigious. Peahens, on the other hand, are mostly brown, which is handy in camouflaging them while they sit on the nests. Male peafowl also have spurs on the backs of their long legs that they will use occasionally during the mating season. Peafowl do have wings and can, in fact, fly. They just don't do it very often.
