"Andean Condor"

The Andean Condor is the largest flying bird in the Western hemisphere, with a wingspan of 3 m and a weight of 9 - 12 kg. These large wings allow the condors to soar on rising thermals of air when looking for food, and the ruff of white feathers around their neck acts like a scarf to keep them warm when flying at such heights. Like many vultures, Andean condors have featherless heads to prevent parasites latching on from the carcasses they are feeding on. On top of that, males and females look very different. The males have a large, fleshy comb on their head and their eyes are brown whereas female's eyes are garnet red.

African lions are the second largest cat in the world, second only to tigers. Males are noticeably larger than females and have a large mane. These differences occur because of the different roles played by the sexes. Females have to be agile for hunting, and males have to be big and burly to protect their offspring.

Snow leopards are well-adapted to their high mountain habitats. Their fur is thick for warmth and spotted for camouflage. Snow leopard's chests and nasal cavity are also well-developed to handle the thin, cold air of the mountains.

The ring-tailed lemur has the tail of a raccoon, which males cover with secretions from scent glands on their chests. They then wave their tails at each other during mating season, engaging in 'stink wars' over females. Males and females look virtually identical.

All lemurs are endangered by the deforestation of Madagascar, which destroys their homes. Although it has been illegal to kill wild lemurs since 1974, many people are not aware of the law and hunting still occurs.

"Black Tailed Prairie Dog"

Black-tailed prairie dogs are often confused with other animals that are colloquially referred to as 'prairie dogs' or 'gophers'. Chief among these in Canada is the Richardson's ground squirrel. Black-tailed prarie dogs are actually much larger than ground squirrels weighing 705 - 1675 g and measuring up to 40 cm long. Males tend to be larger than females, and their weight fluctuates through the seasons. A prairie dog's weight is highest before winter, but interestingly they do not hibernate. As their name suggests, black-tailed prairie dogs differs from other prairie dogs in that it has a black tip on its tail.
