"Burmis Tree 2"

A coloured infrared image of the famous Burmis Tree, standing at the entrance to Crowsnest Pass, near Blairmore, Alberta, Canada.

Captured with a Canon rebel XSi, using a 18-55mm IS lens. Processed with Tiffen DFX.

The Burmis Tree is a limber pine located in south western Alberta along the Crowsnest Highway and east of municipality of Crowsnest Pass. The tree died in the late 1970s after losing its needles. Its age was estimated to be between 200 and 300 years old. In 1998, it was toppled by wind, however members of local community refused to leave it lying. Efforts were made to fix the tree back up using rods and brackets. In 2004, vandals cut one of the tree’s main branches.

Burmis Tree – This rare Limber Pine is one of the most famous and most photographed trees in Alberta (some say the most photographed tree in the world). It was sentenced to perch on a ridge along Highway 3, in Southern Alberta, Canada, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains (11 km (6 mi.) E of the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre), for over 300 years. Its needles were lost in 1978; Chinook winds toppled it in 1998; it was vandalized in 2004. It suffers by living, by acts of love, and by acts of violence. Unfortunately, the Burmis Tree is the only point of interest left of the once prosperous coal mining and lumber town of Burmis.

"First Blooms of Spring"

Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is a plant in the family Asteraceae.

It has been used medicinally as a cough suppressant. The name “tussilago” itself means “cough suppressant.” The plant has been used since at least historical times to treat lung ailments such as asthma as well as various coughs by way of smoking. Crushed flowers supposedly cured skin conditions, and the plant has been consumed as a food item.

Coltsfoot is a perennial herbaceous plant that spreads by seeds and rhizomes. Tussilago is often found in colonies of dozens of plants. The flowers, which superficially resemble dandelions, appear in early spring before dandelions appear. The leaves, which resemble a colt’s foot in cross section, do not appear usually until after the seeds are set. Thus, the flowers appear on stems with no apparent leaves, and the later appearing leaves then wither and die during the season without seeming to set flowers. The plant is typically between 10 – 30 cm in height.

This image was captured in mid-April 2008 in Lynde Shores Conservation Area in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) information:
A common feeder bird with clean black, gray, and white markings, White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you

"Female House Finch"

A female house finch perches amid the barren branches of a tree in a lightly wooded area, in Indian Battle Park in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

The House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) is a medium-sized finch with brown-streaked back and wings, and brown-streaked white underparts. The head, throat, and rump are pink-red. The tail is relatively long and weakly notched. Their bill is short and slightly decurved.

The house finch feeds mostly on seeds, takes some insects and fruits. Swift bounding flight.

The initial range of the House Finch was in the arid American southwest. They were released in the New York City area in the early 1940s, to avoid prosecution when they were being sold illegally in the pet trade. By the mid 1970s, these had crossed the Appalachian Mountains and rapidly expanded westward, meeting up with their kin, which were also extending their range, perhaps due to climate change. The first Alberta birds were reported from the mountains in the 1960s. Sightings expanded to Calgary in the early 1970s. However, significant populations did not develop until the late 1990s, perhaps the result of the eastern arrivals. Presently, high populations can be found in most prairie towns and cities in the southern portion of the province.

This species tends to be closely associated with humans in Alberta. They shelter in large spruce trees and readily come to bird feeders. One major requirement is access to drinking water. Where present, they are year round residents.
